South Indian Uzhunnu Vada - Medhu vada

Uzhunnu Vada Recipe

UZHUNNU VADA - MEDHU VADA

Its one of the most popular snacks made in South. Had tonns of em during my childhood days.
On Sundays when we go back home after the church there used to be Tamil restaurants on the way. We used to have our breakfast from there which includes masaladosa, vada and 3 types of spicy chutneys. Remember very well cuz most of the sundays I used to go to church mainly for this special treat...lol..

Times passed.I got married and moved...now my children loves them as well and this is how I make em.

I have heard there are ''vada makers '' available in the market which will get you  hopefully the perfect shape, eventhough I used to make it with hands.

One can toss them in  jogurt or sambar to make them a lot special .
They are called Thyru Vada and Sambar Vadas then . You may like them aswell if you are a vada fan.

Things needed :

Urad dal or Uzhunnu - 1 cup
water - 2 cups for soaking Uzhunnu
Ginger - a one inch piece, finely chopped
Onion -1/4 ,finely chopped
Green chillies - 1 or 2 medium, finely chopped
Black pepper powder - 1 spoon
Curry leaves -1 spring

salt
backing powder 1/4 tsp

Preparation method :

Soak Urad dal in water for 1 hr. After 1 hr grind it to make a paste. Dont add too much water while grinding .

Mix it with the other ingredients to make the batter for Uzhunnu Vada.

Wet your hands with lil bit water.
Take 1 spoon batter in it . Make it like a ball .

Using your index finger make a small hole in the middle .
Now deep fry it in oil .

Have it with a Coconut Chutney & it's yummy.
